Anna Hazare agitation a 'business' and a 'flop', says Lalu Prasad (India)

 NEW DELHI:

According to Times of India News Report's,  terming Anna Hazare's agitation on Lokpal Bill in Mumbai as "flop", RJD supremo Lalu Prasad on Thursday said the people have "rejected" Team Anna as they have understood its "gameplan".

"They (Team Anna) were selling in the name of people. They have made a business of it. It has all flopped," Prasad told reporters outside Parliament House here.

Hazare had called off his agitation yesterday in the wake of his deteriorating health and poor response in Mumbai. Hazare also scrapped the 'jail bharo' campaign.

Lalu, a strong critic of Team Anna said, "People of the country have understood and they have realised it.

People have rejected them." RJD leader, however, maintained, "Lokpal Bill is weak. It will not remove corruption."

Christmas freeze compels Delhiites to party at home (India)

NEW DELHI:

According to Times of India's News Report, the city celebrated its coldest Christmas in at least 10 years, with the minimum temperature on Sunday falling to 2.9 degrees Celsius, which is also the lowest recorded in December since 2001. Earlier records were not immediately available.

Gurgaon was freezing with the minimum dropping to 0.1 degrees Celsius while Pusa was the coldest spot in the capital at 1.1 degrees. Monday is expected to be more chilly with further drop in temperature predicted while the fog may make a comeback on Tuesday. The maximum on Sunday was recorded at 20.3 degrees.

The minimum temperature fell to 2.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday, making this Christmas the coldest in the capital in at least 10 years.

The weatherman expects the maximum to remain unchanged on Monday, which is likely to be a clear day. The 2.9 degree-C minimum at Delhi's main station (Safdarjung) was five degrees below normal. On Saturday, it stood at 3.3 degrees Celsius.

The cold forced many families who had thought of a festive dinner outing on Sunday to change their plans and stay indoors.

"We planned to take the kids to India Gate and then head to Connaught Place for a Christmas dinner. But it was so cold by the evening, I didn't want to expose the children and we decided to stay home and order in,'' said Dwarka resident Rajnish Aggarwal.

Others who did venture out made sure they were adequately protected. "We put on layers of warm clothes and headed to the malls as we didn't want to spend Christmas at home, especially since it was also a Sunday. The malls were all decked up for Christmas and it was wonderful to be out,'' Vasant Kunj resident Shayna Wanchoo said.

The weatherman said this was the first time in at least a decade that the temperature had dipped below 3 degrees in December. Such low temperatures are usually seen in January. The last time the minimum temperature in December had slipped below 4 was in 2007, when it touched 3.9 degrees. In December last year, the lowest minimum was 5.2 deg C on the 22nd.

Before this, the minimum temperatures in December have fallen below 4 degrees C just twice in the past 10 years (in 2007 and 2005). In the last two years, the lowest minimum has been 5.2. The all-time record in December is 1.1 degrees C on December 26, 1945 and the highest maximum 29.3 deg C on the third of the month in 1987.

Sad Christmas for Philippine flood victims (Philippines)

ILIGAN, Philippines: Tens of thousands of Philippine flood survivors queued for their Christmas meal in packed evacuation centres Sunday, holiday spirits doused by thoughts of more than 2,000 dead or missing kin.

Eight days after devastating flash floods swept to sea entire communities from the southern island of Mindanao, officials said 328,000 people were relying on emergency aid, including more than 69,000 sheltering at evacuation centres.

Village chief Aurelio Magaro joined 422 other survivors from the rural hamlet of Digkilaan lining up for food in the courtyard of a school that wasflattened by the overflowing Mandulog river.

"We have a sad Christmas this year, but we remain hopeful that we will recover," said Magaro, who told AFP he lost 15 relatives to rampaging floodwaters unleashed by tropical storm Washi on December 17.

"How can we celebrate Christmas? We have no money and our houses are gone," said an elderly woman in the queue, who like Magaro is temporarily sleeping at a nearby chapel.

A child sat on the drying mud nearby wearing a red-and-white Santa Claus-style bonnet, the only local reminder of Christmas in this mainly Roman Catholic country.

The official toll stood at 1,183 dead, said Lieutenant-Colonel Leopoldo Galon, a regional military spokesman.

Rescuers say more than a thousand others were listed as missing by relatives, though officials caution many of them could be among the many unclaimed and badly decomposed cadavers at overflowing local mortuaries.

Iligan health officer Levy Villarin told AFP city facilities including schools and gymnasiums were sheltering 57,000 people, including at least 5,000 who had lost their homes and others whose dwellings were choked with mud.

"Some of them do not want to return to their homes because of the traumatic experience that they suffered. They had lost their relatives there," Villarin said.

He said some have to be relocated within the week before students return from the Christmas holidays. However he said permanent relocation sites still have to be identified and structures built.

He said the city had buried just a fourth of its 464 dead, a process slowed by the delay in forensic work where DNA, fingerprint, and dental imprints have to be taken before burial.

Iligan and nearby Cagayan de Oro were the worst-hit areas.

The small forensic team went home to Manila to spend Christmas with their families and will resume work on Monday, even as newly recovered corpses continue to arrive, he said.

Seventeen cadavers were washed ashore Saturday in the port city of Oroquieta, 65 kilometres (40 miles) away, while three others were dug out of the mud in Iligan, he said.

Assembly elections 2012: The big game hunt begins (India)

NEW DELHI:

According to Times of India's Report, Election Commission on Saturday announced the dates for the assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Manipur, setting the stage for a mini-general election which will mark a serious political test for Rahul Gandhi and may potentially provide a window of opportunity to Congress to reverse a pervasive perception of corruption and policy paralysis.

The polls, which include seven-phase voting in UP, would begin on January 28 and end on March 3, with results coming a day later. Election Commission SY Quraishi announced single-phase poll in Goa (March 3), Manipur (January 28), Punjab and Uttarakhand (January 30) while UP would see polling on February 4, 8, 11, 15, 19, 23 and 28. Two states each are ruled by NDA and Congress while BSP commands UP.

The Saturday announcement ended the suspense over poll schedule on which ride the fortunes of embattled Congress. A favourable scoreline, minimum 3-2 with evidence of revival in its fallen fort of UP, would deliver a decisive blow to Anna Hazare-induced inaction at the Centre while`silencing BJP which is on the right side of the septuagenarian campaigner. It is a challenge for Rahul Gandhi who is leading the charge in UP. A successful outcome in UP willl canonize him as party's new mascot and will put him under pressure to lead the government: something which he is averse to.

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi spelt out the significance of the polls when she told party's poll mangers that Team Anna must be countered electorally.

The pollscape seems favourable for Congress, with BJP on the backfoot in Uttarakhand and in Punjab. In UP, party will be more than satisfied if it overtakes BJP's tally, thus besting the saffron challenger once again after the 2009 Lok Sabha polls. That will dispel the perception of slide, and help party keep in good stead for the 2014 battle.

The bar for the party is set low in UP; a good jump on its 2007 score of 22 seats which will make it indispensable for Samajwadi Party to form government. Such an outcome would earn Congress the support of 23-MP Samajwadi camp at the Centre, steeling the tottering UPA-2 from a whimsical Mamata Banerjee, while setting it on course for revival in UP.

It will not be easy though, given that Akali Dal have repeatedly shown the resilience like in 2003 assembly polls and, again, in 2009 Lok Sabha when they defied predictions of rout. The smaller states of Uttarakhand and Goa are difficult to predict though Congress has a clear edge here.

A failure, it goes without saying, would be disastrous, speeding up the downhill slide while reducing Manmohan Singh government into virtual lameduck with BJP on top. Worse, the succession plan for Rahul Gandhi in 2014 polls would be under a cloud.

UP-2012 would be the marquee battle which would test the future of heir-apparents Rahul Gandhi and Akhilesh Yadav and the fate of towering backward class champions in Mulayam Singh Yadav and Mayawati.

Election Commission's decision to advance the most-awaited battle by two months seems in keeping with ruling Congress's eagerness to tap the dip in perception about Mayawati over corruption and malgovernance. Early elections mean Mayawati will not be able to translate her majority in assembly into a larger presence for BSP in Rajya Sabha, and hope for Congress to add a couple to its tally in the Upper House.

Post-Babri, Congress appears on the margins of 'BSP vs SP' battle but is hopeful that Rahul's charge can pump its fortunes and lay the field it can work on to be serious claimant for 80 seats in 2014.

Wannabe Congress apart, UP is being watched for how Mulayam squares up against the dalit czarina who swept him aside on May 11, 2007, to notch a rare majority in the jammed state politics.

It is Yadav chieftain's last chance to win the state he strode after 1989 with the formidable Mandal blend of backwards and Muslims. Samajwadi GenNext Akhilesh is heading the 'kranti rath' with Mulayam still to take the field, clear indication of change of baton.

In the tight battle, Muslims could be the decider, SP's onetime pocketborough which deserted in 2009 polls to protest its tieup with onetime saffron mascot Kalyan Singh. While there are signs that Muslims could return to Samajwadi tent, Congress's full throttled entry with sops like job quota for the community threatens to play the spoiler. The rise of Muslim outfits like Peace Party is a new variable in the UP power matrix.

Mayawati starts with a solid base on paper but questions galore on how much of it remains intact after five years of questionable performance on fronts ranging from governance to corruption to social engineering. A slip here would test the resilience of the dalit leader who, having seen the apogee, would have persevere and regroup.

BJP, on the other hand, is hoping that it can raise its modest tally on the back of reaction to Muslim quota and help from delimitation. Its considerations for revival in state are same as Congress's - as launchpad for Lok Sabha polls.

Year 2012 has the potential to reshape the post-Babri landscape because a weakened SP and BSP would mean a resurgent Congress on the prowl to wrest back Muslims, dalits and uppercastes who fled in reaction to Ayodhya campaign.

Kris Aquino says they will visit Cory, Ninoy on Christmas 2011 (Philippines)

According to ABS-CBN's News Report, Philippine's Queen of All Media Kris Aquino has revealed that the Aquino family is planning to visit the graves of their parents at the Manila Memorial Park on Christmas Day.

In an interview with ABS-CBN News on Saturday, Aquino said it has been a tradition that they visit their parents every Christmas.

She, however, admitted that they will first watch her movie “Segunda Mano” as a family before going to the cemetery.
“We're going tomorrow... Kasi tradition namin ‘yun, after lunch, pero now after the movie. Movie muna. Kasi siyempre kapag hindi sila nanood ng movie ko magtatampo ako. So kailangan watch silang lahat,” she said.

Don Bosco gift-giving

Meanwhile, Aquino said she is happy to make the Christmas of 150 street children and orphans special.
The Aquino family, including President Benigno Aquino III, went to Don Bosco Technical Institute in Makati City on Saturday to distribute Christmas gifts.

“Of course it's very important na huwag natin kalimutan ‘yung mga nasa Mindanao, pero ‘yung mga bata ‘di ba? Na dapat mabigyan din ng pagkakataon na magdiwang ng Pasko,” Aquino said.

“Malapit talaga sa puso namin [ang Don Bosco]... Kasi it's our way of giving back talaga... and we want to of course say thank you to the Don Bosco priests because right after elections also, dito nagmisa para kay PNoy, para maayos yung bilangan,” she added.

2011 was a turbulent ride for PAL and its workers (Philippines)

According to ABS-CBN's News Report, for the Jalbuna family, Christmas Eve won't be spent at home feasting on noche buena, but at the picket line in front of the Philippine Airlines In-flight Center in Pasay City.

"Wala pa kami pamasko, pero lagi ko sinasabi sa mga anak ko ang Pasko ay para kay Lord... Dito kami magpa-Pasko," Teng Jalbuna, whose husband worked at PAL's catering department for 20 years, told abs-cbnNEWS.com.

It has been 3 months since Jalbuna's husband and some 2,600 PAL workers were laid off as a result of the flag carrier's outsourcing program. PAL implemented the outsourcing of its catering, call center reservation and ground crew operations on October 1.

PAL Employees Association (PALEA), the ground crew's union, opposed the plan and continued their fight, holding a wildcat strike that paralyzed its operations in late September. The members also set up a protest camp in front of the airline's In-flight Center in October and they remain there until now.

Many refused to get their separation pay and did not sign up to work for the outsourcing companies designated by PAL.
Nearly 3 months since they lost their jobs, PALEA members and their families are showing a united front by spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day at their makeshift camp. An anticipated Christmas mass will be held at the camp on Saturday, with Bishop Broderick Pabillo, director of CBCP’s National Secretariat for Social Action, officiating.

"Ang sa akin, prinsipyo na lang. Apat ang anak ko, maliliit pa. Kung may ma-ospital sa amin, malaking bagay sa amin yun medical benefits. Eh ang separation pay napakaliit. Ang pera madali maubos, pero ang trabaho ang kailangan namin... Kung hanggang matapos ito, lalaban kami," Jalbuna said.

Farhana Sarip, a Muslim who worked as a PAL Arabic translator for 20 years, was one of those who did not accept the offer to become a contractual employee with the new service providers.

"Regular employee na ako, tapos biglang magiging contractual, di naman kami papayag," said Sarip, who used to earn P23,000 a month and was offered only P11,000 a month by the service provider.

Sarip said PAL continues to ask her to come back to work, but it was her husband who told her to remain strong and continue the protest.

PALEA president Gerry Rivera said 2011 was a "turbulent" year for PAL and its workers, but is confident the PAL workers will be vindicated in the courts.

PALEA has asked the Court of Appeals to set aside the resolutions issued by Malacanang and the Department of Labor and Employment that gave the go-signal for PAL to spin-off its catering, ground handling and call center reservation departments. The labor group wants the outsourcing and termination of the PAL employees be declared illegal.

Rivera hopes the court cases would be resolved soon, but noted PALEA will continue their fight for as long as they can.
"Ang laban na ito ay hindi lang sa PALEA, ngunit para sa mga Pilipinong manggagawa (Our fight is not just PALEA's but for all of the Filipino workers," he said.

Optimistic about the future

However, PAL maintained the outsourcing program was needed to stem the losses it has been incurring.

In 2008 and 2009, PAL lost $312 million. In 2010, PAL posted a $72.5 million comprehensive net income. However, in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, PAL posted a $10.6 million loss.

PAL president Jaime Bautista was earlier quoted by BusinessMirror as saying the protest arising from the implementation of its outsourcing program affected the entire operations of the airline. He noted its third quarter financial performance would be badly affected by the higher cost of jet fuel and the workers' protest.

"Because of the strike, our performance will be affected in terms of revenue and profit. It may also affect our entire fiscal year," said Bautista.

However, PAL seems to be optimistic about the future. The company said operations are now back to normal and passenger confidence has returned in time for the Chr istmas peak travel season.

PAL is trying to protect its international market, which account for up to 70% of its revenue. "We continue to protect our mature international market such as South Korea and Japan. Hopefully, load factor will hit the high 80 percent this December and a good growth in January and February of next year,"
Bautista said.

PAL said there has been a very good response to its biggest ticket sale promotion this month, a sign of renewed customer confidence. The airline offered low-priced fares to all its domestic and international destinations, as low as $30 to Hong Kong and $498 to the US.

PAL is hoping for a smooth ride next year, but the labor problems with PALEA continue to hover in the horizon and may cause some turbulence in the future.

Runaway couples share rooms in honeymoon time in Sirsa (India)

According to Times of India, this is a protection home, not a hotel for honeymoon. This may apparently the message the district police have for runaway couples here, as two couples are forced to share a single room, till they feel safe enough about living outside.

Except for sharing their experiences before or after running away from their houses to tie the nuptial knot against the wishes of their families, the couples here these days talk about the ha,rdships they face, especially privacy problems, on account of sharing the room.

Two pairs of cots with inadequate quilts and beddings in a poorly lit room add to the woes of the four couples who are forced to share two rooms of the protection house, manned by a sub-inspector, who expressed inability when it came to providing facilities here. "Giving protection is our job and we are doing that well," said the policeman on duty here. The couples are facing problems as they are cramped for space at the accommodation provided to them.

"We 'adjust' somehow. We were three couples earlier but are four now. The administration arranged only two rooms for us. Newly-wed couples need privacy, but there is no privacy for us," said a couple, Parmanand Singh and Sarvjeet Kaur.
