Flying to Mumbai next week? Expect delays (India)

Report from Times of India,

MUMBAI: Flyers at Mumbai airport may have to face flight delays for the next four months. The main runway (09-27) at the airport will be shut for flight operations from January 20.

Though flights will be operated on the secondary runway (14-32), airport officials said delays of 30-40 minutes are likely as the secondary runway cannot accommodate as many flights at the main runway.

Though the closure may cause inconveniences to flyers for a while, it will help flight operations in the long run. Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (MIAL) will construct a rapid exit taxiway (RET) so that flights can vacate the runway quickly.

MIAL officials said the main runway will be shut for operations from January 20 till June 1, from 9am to 5pm every day. A MIAL spokesperson said the RET work will be complete by June 1. MIAL has recently constructed two RETs on the secondary runway as well.
