US tourists go on kissing spree in Tuticorin, beaten up (India)

TUTICORIN (TN): 

According to Report of Express Buzz, three US tourists indulging in new year revelry were injured when local public thrashed them after they allegedly hugged and kissed women passersby in an inebriated state here, police said today.

The three men from California were injured when the public assaulted and threw stones at them last night.

Two of them, later handed over to police, have been hospitalised while another managed to flee the scene, police said adding they were in their late 40s.Hospital sources said the two had suffered bruises and concussions and were under treatment.The trio, staying in a local hotel, were drunk and had come on to the road to celebrate the new year when they started hugging and kissing women who were walking on the road.Shocked by their conduct, the women raised an alarm. But the three Americans, also probably unaware of Indian culture and customs, went on the kissing spree, angering the public.As the local people could not communicate with the well- built Americans due to language problem, situation became more complicated, police said.Some youths then hit the three US nationals with stones and boxed them when one of them managed to escape.Police said no case had been registered till noon.

PM begins his New Year by praying at the Golden Temple (India)

According to news report of Times of India, on a personal visit to the holy city, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh began his new year by paying obeisance at the Golden Temple this morning.

Singh along with his wife Gursharan Kaur reached the Golden Temple at 6.30 am and went to the sanctum sanctorum where they spent half an hour.

They listened to the Shabd Kirtan (religious hymns) and Ardas (prayer) while sitting cross-legged with folded hands in the VIP corridor of the sanctum sanctorum of the Harmandar Sahab,

popularly known as Golden Temple.

The Prime Minister was attired in a white Kurta-Pyjama and a dark grey jacket while Gursharan Kaur wore a maroon-colored shawl and cream-colored 'salweer kameez'.

The couple, who arrived here last evening, took full round of the marbled periphery around the water pool of Golden Temple to reach the sanctum sanctorum.

They listened to the religious hymns for half and hour with rapt attention and closed eyes.

Afterwards they went to Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, to pay obeisance where they listened to the Ardas for five minutes.

The PM was escorted in the periphery of the Golden Temple in three different human chains created by the NSG from Delhi, troops of Punjab Police and then Task force of the the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee, the apex religious body of the Sikhs.

Meanwhile, after paying obeisance at the Golden Temple in the morning, the couple while coming out had to face the protest of supporters of Anna Hazare.

The incident took place when Hazare supporters numbering around 40, including some women, raised slogans against the government as well as corruption.

Indian Women Fetch Bronze in Four-nation Hockey Tourney

According to Zee News-India, the Indian women`s hockey team notched up a facile 4-1 win over Ireland to clinch the bronze medal in the four-nation Tournament held in Parana, Argentina.

Both the teams were locked 1-1 at half time but India came back strongly in the second session to fire three goals.

The goal scorers for India were Jaspreet Kaur (penalty corner 7th min), Anuradha Thokchom (58th min), Vandana Katariya (68th min) and Ritu Rani (penalty corner 70th min), while Aine Connery (7th min) sounded the board for Ireland.

Ireland took an early lead in the seventh minute with the lone goal scored by Connery after a defensive lapse by the Indians.

India restored parity when Jaspreet Kaur found the target from a penalty corner in the 26th minute after an Irish defender obstructed Vandana Katariya in the striking circle.

India dominated the proceedings in the second half and exhibited flair as they mounted attacks with regular monotony.

The Indian forwards -- Poonam Rani, Vandana Katariya, Rani and Anuradha Thokchom -- were well supported by midfielders Asunta Lakra, Kirandeep Kaur and Ritu Rani as they engineered forays in the rival half.

Goalkeeper Yogita Bali and deep defenders Pinky Thokchom, Jaspreet Kaur and Preety Sunila Kiro stood tall and thwarted all moves by the Irish attackers. Anuradha Thokchom put India ahead in the 58th minute when she beat Ireland custodian Emma Gray with a deflection from a right flank cross.

Vandana Katariya increase the lead to 3-1 in the 68th minuyogita balite when she found the mark after a Ritu Rani-Asunta Lakra combined midfield manoeuvre. India rounded off the tally at the stroke of full time with Preety Sunila Kiro scoring from a penalty corner variation.

India thus won both the bronze medals at four nation tournaments held at Buenos Aires and Parana on this tour. The team will return from Argentina on Wednesday. In the final world champion Argentina beat South Africa 2-0 to win the tournament.
